Environment monitor vs baby monitor: the difference (and why you might want both)

By Stellar Baby Updated 7 July 2026 1 min read

You'd be forgiven for thinking a baby monitor and an environment monitor are the same thing. They sound similar and they often sit in the same nursery. But they answer two very different questions.

Here's the difference.

What a baby monitor does

A baby monitor watches and listens. Audio, video, sometimes movement. Its job is to let you see and hear your babe from another part of the house.

What an environment monitor does

An environment monitor reads the conditions around your babe, temperature and humidity, and turns them into information you can act on. It's not watching your babe; it's reading the space they're in. And it reads that space more accurately than a monitor's sensor, here's why.

It is also why Orbie has no screen, no light and no sound.

Why they answer different questions

One tells you what your babe is doing. The other tells you what the environment around them is like. Neither replaces the other, which is exactly why plenty of parents use both.

So is Orbie a baby monitor?

No. Orbie is an environment monitor. It reads temperature and humidity where your babe sleeps and turns it into simple dressing guidance in the app. It works alongside whatever baby monitor you already have, not instead of it.

If you want the longer version, we answer this and about sixty other questions in the Orbie FAQs.

Common questions

Is Orbie a baby monitor?

No. Orbie is an environment monitor. It reads the temperature and humidity around your babe, rather than watching or listening to them like a baby monitor does.

Can I use Orbie with my existing baby monitor?

Yes. They do different jobs, so they work well together. Your monitor watches your babe; Orbie reads the environment around them.

Does an environment monitor replace a baby monitor?

No, they are complementary. An environment monitor adds information about the conditions; it does not watch or listen to your babe.
