Dry air and your babe: the winter congestion link
Why the heater might be behind the sniffles.
Winter arrives, the heater goes on, and a few days later your babe is a bit sniffly and their skin's looking dry. The air in the room might be part of the story.
The short version: heaters dry the air right out
Cold air already holds less moisture. So in winter, once it's heated indoors, that same moisture spreads out across the warmer air, so the environment ends up feeling drier with lower humidity. Very dry air can leave little noses and skin feeling it, and can make congestion feel worse. It's rarely a big deal, but it's worth knowing what's going on.
What "comfortable" humidity actually is
A commonly cited comfortable range is roughly 40 to 60 percent. It's nice to have a general idea of what's considered baseline, otherwise they're just random numbers that mean nothing. Winter heating often pushes a room below that, which is when dryness starts to show up. The other end matters too: air that's very damp isn't ideal either, so the middle is the sweet spot. What helps
- If the air is persistently very dry, a humidifier can bring it back toward the middle range. You don't always need one, only when the room is genuinely dry.
- Don't overshoot into damp. More isn't better; the middle is.

When it's more than dry air
Dry air can make snuffles feel worse, but it doesn't cause every cold. If your babe seems unwell, is feeding poorly, or you're worried, trust your gut and check in with your GP, child health nurse, or another health professional.
