So what even is a TOG?

TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade. Think of it like SPF, but for cosiness: the lower the number the lighter and cooler, the higher the number the warmer and snugglier. It comes from the textile world (it's how doonas get rated) and baby sleep borrowed it because it genuinely works. The trick was never the number itself, it's matching it to the temperature where your babe actually sleeps.

The Stellar Baby TOG guide

Stellar Baby TOG guide chart: what TOG and sleepwear layers suit a baby at each temperature

The quick version:

  • Over 25°C: a 0.2 TOG bag with just a singlet, or nappy only.
  • 23 to 24°C: a 0.2 TOG bag with a long-sleeve onesie and singlet, or 1.0 TOG bag with just a long-sleeve onesie.
  • 20 to 22°C: a 1.0 TOG bag with a long-sleeve onesie and singlet, or a 2.5 TOG bag with just a long-sleeve onesie.
  • 16 to 19°C: a 2.5 TOG bag with a long-sleeve onesie and long-sleeve bodysuit, or a 3.5 TOG bag with a long-sleeve onesie and singlet.
  • Under 15°C: a 3.5 TOG bag with a long-sleeve onesie and long-sleeve bodysuit.

How to use it

Match the TOG to the temperature where your babe sleeps, not the forecast outside. Then feel their chest or the back of the neck, not their hands and feet (those run cool on everyone, Red Nose will tell you the same). Warm and comfortable, not clammy, means you've nailed it. You know your babe best, so adjust a layer if your gut says so.

The catch nobody tells you about

Here's the thing though: the temperature doesn't hold still. It's 21 degrees at bedtime and 16 by 2am, and that quietly changes what your babe should be in. That's the gap Orbie fills. It reads the live temperature and humidity right where your babe sleeps and tells you the TOG and layers to match, updating as the night moves. Same logic as this guide, just done for you, so you're never squinting at a chart at 3am.
